(Literacy, professional training, health, economic self sufficiency )
Short History
November, 1919 : Zonta International was founded in Buffalo by Mary E. Jenkins,
publisher of the Syracuse Herald. She brought together women who had held
important positions. They turned their attention towards promoting the status of
women.
In
1928, girls equal education became an organizational priority with the adoption
of the Vocational Education for Girls Project.
As we move towards Zonta’s 100th anniversary in 2019, Zonta International
continues to be on the front lines of the fight for women's equal rights through
local and global projects that promote economic self-sufficiency, political
equality, access to education and health, and the prevention of violence against
women.
Each year, Zontians dedicate hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours and
millions of dollars
Finances
Zonta clubs organise a wide variety of events to raise the funds needed for
service projects at local, regional and international level. Some projects are
carried out with sponsors. Members may provide financial aid to national and
international projects with humanitarian, social and cultural aims for women.
Running costs are exclusively financed by members’ subscriptions.
District 29 History
In 1993, the last conference of former District 14 was held in Lausanne. There
were very many members, and 10 different countries, so it was decided that it
should be divided to form five new Districts. It was at a time when the European
Community was being built, and as Zonta – throughout its history and throughout
the world – is an international organisation, it was agreed that the
international nature should be maintained in each of the new districts.
So, in 2010, District 29, has 71 clubs, in 7 countries with more than 1800
members, 7 different cultures communicate in 6 different languages
